Where Compassion Creates a World of Difference

I'm Marita, and I invite you to journey with me through the pages of my life, a life intertwined with a passion for compassion.

Early Influences

When I first embarked on the path of caring for the elderly, I encountered George, an elderly Italian man who bore a striking resemblance to my unwell father back in Zimbabwe. His son, also named George, left him in a facility where he longed for home. Witnessing his tears and loneliness, my heart ached. I knew I had to act. I reached out to him, spoke soothing words, and promised to connect him with his son.

George's trust in me ignited a profound sense of trust in return. Every shift, his eyes would light up, eager for our conversations. These interactions illuminated the deep loneliness that often engulfs the elderly. This was the moment compassion ignited within me.

I realised that these incredible souls we care for are not just frail and needy; they are isolated, lonely, and grieving. Compassion became my guiding light.

Career path

My journey began as a state-registered nurse in Zimbabwe, where I also practised midwifery. My career meandered from bedside nursing to a consultant unit, and later, as a Nursing Unit Manager in a district hospital. The United Kingdom beckoned, leading me to work with elderly people with learning disabilities. After a brief return to Zimbabwe, I ventured to Australia through Moran Health Care.

My skills evolved as I delved deeper into Aged Care, culminating in roles as Care Manager and Residential Manager. Along this journey, my passion for compassion grew, leading me to write the book "Art of Care," sharing the profound impact of compassion in caregiving.

Challenges Faced

Writing "Art of Care" posed my greatest challenge. While some believed compassion was a gift, I aimed to spark a conversation about its benefits. Resistance ensued, yet I persisted. I faced moments when my team's care could have been better, but I remained committed to making them feel safe and secure, knowing this would foster a compassionate environment.

The "Art of Care" Book

My book encapsulates my caregiving journey, emphasising that care extends beyond tasks. Compassion-driven care is about understanding clients as people with complex emotions and needs, treating them with respect, and preserving their dignity.

Personal Experiences

My role as the primary caregiver for my husband with complex health issues deeply influenced my understanding of compassion. I have learnt that a compassionate environment prolongs life, it's not just about medication and other medical interventions, but ultimately the atmosphere where the care recipient resides.

It taught me that creating a safe environment where vulnerability is protected is essential. Compassion makes caring enjoyable and purposeful to the caregiver.
